St. Patrick’s Breastplate
Below are appended three (3) iterations of this august and mighty prayer for protection against the diabolical, visible or otherwise.
The first is a heavily truncated and very short version, of Your correspondent’s own editing and minor adjustment, in English & Latin, and maintains the essential thrust of the invocation; it is committed to memory with relative ease and can be recited daily, before one ventures out beyond the threshold. If the reader were to undertake a novena to the great Saint, this may be of some utility. The liturgical Offertory prayer is included for just such a purpose.
The second is a traditional and poetic rendering of the English text which, albeit somewhat condensed, maintains the ‘ancient’ verbiage and potent imagery. This is a most popular version of the prayer.
The third (English + Latin) is an ancient and complete version. The English text is in essence a quite literal rendering of the Latin, though with poetic license in parts: for example, the Latin “Christus hine, Christus illine, Christus a tergo” (Christ here, Christ there, Christ behind) is given as the most endearingly romantic “Christ in the fort, Christ in the chariot-seat, Christ in the mighty stern.”
A feast of importance in nations or locales with strong Irish heritage or influence, St. Patrick’s Day is a Double of the First Class (d1c1) in Ireland (a day of obligation), Australia & New Zealand and thus often affording a dispensation from the Lenten fast; a Double of the Second Class (d2c1) in the US&A and Double Major (dm) in the UK.
Domini est salus, Christi est salus. Sancte Patrícius, ora pro nobis.
The Lorica of St. Patrick
(excerpt)
I BIND unto myself to-day
The strong power of an invocation of the Trinity,
Against the snares of demons,
Against the temptations of vices,
Against the lusts of nature,
Against the incantations of druids,
Against every man who meditates injury to me:
Whether far or near, with few or with many.
I have set around me [this] power against every hostile savage force,
Directed against my body and my soul.
Christ protect me to-day;
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right, Christ at my left,
Christ in the fort, Christ in the chariot-seat,
Christ in the mighty stern.
Salvation is of the Lord, Salvation is of Christ.
May Thy salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.
Amen.
~ Novena suggestion: Offertory (Ps. 88:25) ~
My truth and My mercy shall be with him:
and in My Name shall his horn be exalted.
Pater noster .. Ave Maria .. Gloria Patri ..
Posui circa me sane [hanc] potentia,
Contra omnem potentiam hostilem sævam,
Excogitatam meo corpori et meæ animæ.
Christus me protegat hodie ;
Christus mecum, Christus ante me,
Christus me pone, Christus in me,
Christus infra me, Christus supra me,
Christus ad dextram meam, Christus ad lævam meam,
Christus hine, Christus illine,
Christus a tergo.
Domini est salus, Christi est salus.
Salus tua, Domine, sit semper nobiscum.
Amen.

The Breastplate of St. Patrick
Traditional, long poetic version
I BIND unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same
The Three in One and One in Three.
I bind this today to me forever
By power of faith, Christ’s incarnation;
His baptism in Jordan river,
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb,
His riding up the heavenly way,
His coming at the day of doom
I bind unto myself today.
I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of Cherubim;
The sweet ‘Well done’ in judgment hour,
The service of the Seraphim,
Confessors’ faith, Apostles’ word,
The Patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord
And purity of virgin souls.
I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the star lit heaven,
The glorious sun’s life giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea
Around the old eternal rocks.
I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward;
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.
Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar my course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility
I bind to me these holy powers.
Against all Satan’s spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart’s idolatry,
Against the wizard’s evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave, the poisoned shaft,
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
By Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.
Amen.
Sancte Patrícius, ora pro nobis!

St. Patrick was a powerful force and protection again all evil and paganism. In this world today, we tend to pray for our individual wants and needs. We need to change our mindset and prayers to “We” instead of “I” or “me.” In that way we unite our prayers as one family in the Trinity. We pray not only for ourselves, but for all of us, even our enemies. We really need St. Patrick to help us today more than ever. We need to pray as a united front against all evil, terrorism, drugs, gangs and violence of all kinds. United in the power of prayer with the help of powerful Saints such as St. Patrick we can do it whilw bringing about world peace and strengthing our family units.
Amen.
Both versions are great!
I cannot understand WHY our priests and Deacons do to teach and recite and promote this incredible prayer! Let us all pray that they will. We need it more than ever.
Charlie
Great protection from St
Patrick.

St. Patrick Protect me and my Loved Ones. Amen!
